Remote Vacuum Connection

The installation of the vertex detector (VXD) into the Belle II driftchamber (CDC) is a delicate operation which requires very high precision and extreme care because of the very fragile structures of the beryllium beam pipe and the self supporting 75 µm thin silicon sensors. The option to close the vacuum connection between central beam pipe and the beam pipe mounted inside the final focus quadrupoles would significantly ease the entire procedure and would make the VXD installation much more safe. The DESY group has designed a prototype of such a remote vacuum connection based on a hydraulic mechanism. A test system will be built at DESY to verify its functionality.
